You Don’t Need an Expensive Marketing Platform to Start Building Your Prospect List
Every professional factoring broker needs a CRM. Your CRM is where you maintain prospect records, record conversations, schedule follow-ups, track opportunities, and manage relationships. But as your prospect database grows, there is another tool that becomes increasingly useful: a mass email marketing service.
Suppose you’ve accumulated 800 contacts consisting of staffing companies, manufacturers, distributors, trucking companies, and professional referral sources. You may want to send an educational email to all of your staffing prospects without individually emailing them through your CRM. That’s where an email service provider comes in.
The good news for new brokers is that you don’t necessarily have to pay for one immediately. Several reputable email marketing companies offer free plans that provide more than enough capability for a broker building an initial database. And most factoring consultants don’t need sophisticated marketing automation. They need the basics:
Import contacts. Organize them. Segment them. Create an attractive email. Send it. See who opened and clicked.
Here are five services worth considering.
1. Kit — Our Top Choice for Building a Larger Free List
Kit formerly known as ConvertKit, currently has an unusually generous free plan: up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited email broadcasts. It also includes audience tagging and segmentation, unlimited forms and landing pages, and A/B testing for broadcasts. The segmentation feature is particularly useful for factoring consultants.
Kit keeps subscribers in one central database and uses Tags and Segments to organize them. A broker might create tags such as:
Staffing
Trucking
Manufacturing
Distribution
Referral Source
Commercial Banker
CPA
Chamber Contact
Factoring Prospect
A subscriber can have multiple tags. You can then build segments using those tags and other information. That makes it possible to send a payroll-funding article only to staffing companies while sending a referral-oriented message only to bankers and CPAs. Kit’s free plan deliberately limits some of its more sophisticated automation capabilities, but that may not matter to the typical beginning factoring broker.
You probably don’t need them.
If your primary requirement is building a substantial list, segmenting it and sending regular broadcasts, Kit is exceptionally attractive.
FREE PLAN: Up to 10,000 subscribers; unlimited broadcasts.
BEST FOR: A broker who expects to build a relatively large prospect database.
2. Sender — An Excellent Free Plan for Frequent Emailing
Sender deserves serious consideration because its free plan currently supports up to 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month. That’s substantial capacity for a new factoring practice.
For example, a broker with 1,000 prospects could theoretically send several campaigns during a month while remaining within the free allowance. Sender also provides segmentation on its free offering. You might divide your list into:
- Factoring Prospects — Hot
- Factoring Prospects — Nurture
- Staffing Prospects
- Trucking Prospects
- Professional Referral Sources
- Chamber Contacts
Then tailor your messages accordingly. Sender also provides forms, pop-ups, templates and automation features, although again, a beginning broker shouldn’t feel compelled to use everything available.
FREE PLAN: Up to 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month.
BEST FOR: Brokers who want to send frequently to a moderately sized list.
3. EmailOctopus — Simple and Generous
EmailOctopus is another interesting choice for brokers who don’t want a complicated system. Its current free Starter plan provides up to 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month. It includes an email builder, more than 100 mobile-friendly templates, reporting, a landing page and signup form. The free version does place EmailOctopus branding on emails and limits how long reports remain available, but those compromises may be perfectly reasonable for someone starting a factoring practice at minimal cost. The attraction here is simplicity.
A factoring broker doesn’t necessarily need an elaborate “marketing ecosystem.” Sometimes you simply want to upload a prospect list, organize it and send a professional-looking newsletter or educational article.
FREE PLAN: Up to 2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month.
BEST FOR: Brokers wanting a straightforward email broadcasting platform without excessive complexity.
4. Brevo — Huge Contact Storage, But a Daily Sending Limit
Brevo takes a very different approach to its free plan. Rather than severely limiting the number of contacts you can store, Brevo currently allows free accounts to hold up to 100,000 contacts.
There’s a catch:
You can send only 300 emails per day on the free plan. That makes Brevo interesting for brokers building large prospect databases but less attractive for someone wanting to send a 2,000-person email blast on Tuesday morning. A campaign exceeding 300 recipients isn’t sent to everyone simultaneously under the free plan. Brevo explains that the remaining contacts must be requeued as the daily allowance becomes available.
Still, consider a new broker with 500 carefully selected local prospects. Sending 200 or 300 targeted messages at a time may be entirely adequate. Brevo also provides email campaigns, templates, basic reporting and some marketing automation on its free plan.
FREE PLAN: Up to 100,000 stored contacts; 300 email sends per day.
BEST FOR: Brokers who want to maintain a large database but don’t require large same-day broadcasts.
5. MailerLite — Excellent Software, But a Much Smaller Free Plan
MailerLite has long been popular with small businesses because it combines a relatively easy-to-use interface with email campaigns, landing pages, signup forms, segmentation and automation. However, there has been an important recent change.
As of June 2026, MailerLite reduced its free-plan allowance to 250 active subscribers and 2,500 emails per month. That’s considerably smaller than Kit, Sender or EmailOctopus. MailerLite nevertheless remains worth mentioning because its free plan provides access to useful marketing tools, including segmentation, three automations, signup forms and a landing page.
For a brand-new broker starting with 50 or 100 carefully selected prospects, it could still be perfectly adequate. But someone actively building a database of several thousand factoring prospects will outgrow the free tier relatively quickly.
FREE PLAN: Up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails per month.
BEST FOR: Brokers with very small lists who value a polished, easy-to-use platform.
How Do the Five Compare?
| Provider | Free Contacts/Subscribers | Free Sending | Segmentation | Our Take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kit | 10,000 | Unlimited broadcasts | Yes | ★★★★★ |
| Sender | 2,500 | 15,000/month | Yes | ★★★★★ |
| EmailOctopus | 2,500 | 10,000/month | Yes | ★★★★ |
| Brevo | 100,000 stored | 300/day | Yes | ★★★★ |
| MailerLite | 250 | 2,500/month | Yes | ★★★ |
Free-plan terms change frequently, so brokers should verify current limits before committing to a platform.
But Don’t Confuse Your CRM With Your Email Marketing Service
These two tools perform different jobs. Think of your CRM as your sales office.
That’s where you record:
Who is the prospect?
When did I call?
What did we discuss?
When should I follow up?
How much does the company invoice?
Is this a qualified factoring opportunity?
Your email marketing service has another job: Communicating efficiently with groups of prospects. For example, your CRM might contain detailed records for 2,000 prospects.
Your email service might let you select:
Staffing Companies — 327 contacts
and send those prospects an article titled:
“Growing Your Staffing Company? Don’t Let Weekly Payroll Limit Your Growth.”
That’s something entirely different from sending an individual follow-up email to a hot prospect.
Segmentation Is More Important Than Fancy Automation
Beginning brokers sometimes become fascinated with elaborate automated marketing funnels. Don’t overcomplicate things. For most independent factoring consultants, good segmentation is considerably more valuable than sophisticated automation.
A broker should be able to quickly identify:
- Staffing Companies
- Trucking Companies
- Manufacturers
- Distributors
- Commercial Service Companies
- Government Contractors
- Commercial Bankers
- CPAs
- Attorneys
- Chamber Contacts
Then send information that actually matters to each group. A staffing-company owner should receive information about financing payroll. A manufacturer may be interested in financing large orders. A commercial banker should receive information explaining when factoring can help one of the bank’s declined loan applicants.
The more relevant the email, the less it feels like mass email.
Start Free — Upgrade When the Business Justifies It
For a beginning factoring consultant, there is little reason to start the business with another large monthly software bill. Start with the free tools.
- Learn email marketing.
- Build your database.
- Develop useful content.
- Segment your prospects.
- Send consistently.
- Track the response.
As the list grows and commissions begin arriving, moving to a paid plan becomes another ordinary cost of doing business.
Of these five services, Kit and Sender currently stand out for the beginning factoring broker. Kit’s free allowance of up to 10,000 subscribers and unlimited broadcasts is difficult to ignore, while Sender’s 2,500-subscriber/15,000-email allowance provides plenty of room for a broker building a serious local or industry-specific database.
You don’t need the world’s most sophisticated marketing automation system to generate factoring business.
You need a good list, sensible segmentation, useful information—and the discipline to stay in front of your prospects.
